Funding for ASEAN programme on entrepreneurship for HE

26/11/2007
Asean countries have secured funding to establish a common educational programme on entrepreneurship for university students, as one of the ways to strengthen regional integration among small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

One of the purposes of such an entrepreneurship educational programme is to strengthen SMEs and rural industries, as well as benefitting students, universities and the local communities simultaneously. It is anticipated that developing a common regional curriculum on entrepreneurship will lessen the economic disparity between urban and rural areas.

It is proposed that 60 per cent of the curriculum would be the same for all Asean countries, while 40 per cent would be suited to the respective countries own requirements.

The concept of the common curriculum is to conduct a pilot study for every country in the region to develop the textbook. Japan has already done a pilot study with three participating universities in Indonesia between January and June this year.

The project to establish a common curriculum in the region was first proposed during an Asean Economic Ministers meeting, and is part of the strategic schedule in the Asean Economic Community Blueprint.
