Abstract : The focus of this report is on understanding the factors that determine graduate entrepreneurship in the UK. This is important for two reasons. First, there is an evidence gap in our understanding of what motivates graduate entrepreneurship. Prior studies have tended to focus either on the local or the regional rather than the national picture. Equally, few prior studies have considered a rich set of factors that may help explain graduate entrepreneurship. Such understandings are also important for a second reason: the UK economy, like other developed economies, needs enterprising graduates to drive future levels of productivity and well-being (Hannon, 2005). This report examines graduate entrepreneurship from The Class of ’99 (Purcell et al, 2005) data set which is a representative study of 9,236 UK graduates and diplomates. Besides its large scale, a second advantage of the data set is that it charts - over a four year period (1999-2003) - the labour market outcomes of graduates. The bulk of the report concentrates upon current (2003) graduate entrepreneurs and contrasts these with the most comparable group: employed graduates. It examines differences between graduate entrepreneurs and the employed in terms of a rich set of issues: Which individual personal characteristics help determine graduate entrepreneurship? What is the value of the higher education experience? How influential is support? Does student debt deter entrepreneurial activity? What type of work environment is enjoyed by graduate entrepreneurs? What are the outcomes of employment and entrepreneurship? The report also considers future propensity towards entrepreneurship and the nature of entrepreneurial spells over the four year period.
