Abstract : The study was commissioned by a number of partners including; the NCGE; Higher Education Academy; Enterprise Insight; Council for Industry in Higher Education; and, the Small Business Service. This study is about good practice enterprise development in a selection of UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). This study was commissioned to identify and describe examples of enterprise development good practice in UK HEIs and to outline how the outcomes are, or can, be achieved. The purpose of the case studies is to showcase UK good practice and to offer examples and role models to assist HEIs introduce and further develop their enterprise related activities. To achieve this, fourteen HEI case studies were undertaken. Based on a standard analytic framework, each case study sought to identify and establish; • The nature, extent and historical development of enterprise activity within the HEI. In addition to setting the context, this helps understand the mechanisms used to introduce enterprise into the HEI. • Whether and how the main activities in each HEI case study deliver the NCGE outcomes. • Whether and how the HEIs assess outcomes from their enterprise activities and, in particular, whether they use the outcomes from the Outcome Framework in their assessment, and • The on-going challenges faced by each activity. The aim was for the case studies to cover a range of different contexts (e.g. different types of HEI and subject) and enterprise development activities including education both within and outwith the curricula and support for student, graduate and alumni start-ups.
