Abstract : This paper addresses the issue of development of effective policies for the promotion of entrepreneurship in the Higher Education (HE) sector in the UK. The context is that of major current initiatives which are focusing upon the development of appropriate programmes for the teaching of entrepreneurship and their role in facilitating university engagement with the community. There is particular concern for the role of entrepreneurship in stimulating technology transfer and commercialisation of academic research. Two key issues are identified. The first is that of the most appropriate concept of entrepreneurship to be adopted. The second is that of what capacities will need to be developed, what changes will need to be made and how they may be best facilitated if the impact of current initiatives is to be sustainable.
