Abstract : This study was commissioned by the National Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship (NCGE) to explore finalists’ and graduates’ career decision making processes in relation to entrepreneurship. Previous studies have indicated a gap in knowledge concerning how student intentions and aspirations for graduate entrepreneurship are realised. This study used an action research approach to investigate the transition from finalist to graduate entrepreneur, aiming to understand finalists’ experiences, decision making factors and the underlying issues, both rational and emotional, which affect their decisions. The participants included students from the University of Derby in 2005 with experience of enterprise education or voluntary enterprise events. It was not known at the outset which students would progress into self-employment and the study explores the barriers, real and perceived, faced by ‘enterprising’ graduates.
