| Abstract : |
In 2005, NCGE commissioned the Institute for Entrepreneurship (IfE) at the University of Southampton to undertake a programme of research to provide a comprehensive understanding of ‘Development Patterns of Graduates’ in Southampton. This meant surveying a range of hard variables (such as graduate retention), but also soft variables that could serve as preliminary indicators of graduates’ desirability, feasibility and propensity of entrepreneurship. In taking this multi-level approach, this study followed from recommendations of the University of Durham NCGE Study 2004 and ISBA (now ISBE) consortium research (2005). This study was completed over a three month period from July 2004 to October 2005.
The overall aim of the research was to develop a comprehensive understanding of the drivers for and barriers to graduate entrepreneurship within the 10 critical years after graduation. As part of this, a preliminary life-cycle model had to be conceptualised including an evaluation of the limitations and potentials of such an model. Ultimately, a preliminary questionnaire instrument had to be developed and tested by with a sample population from the alumni of the University of Southampton (UoS) and Southampton Solent University (SSU). Furthermore, the ongoing employability of this questionnaire instrument had to be evaluated in terms of the compliance of stakeholders who could facilitate or hinder the collection of the data from graduates.
